Chen Buqing’s Purple Clay (Zisha)

In the 13th year of the Qing dynasty’s Qianlong reign (1748), the master of purple clay, Chen Buqing, who was a direct descendant of the Ming dynasty’s master of purple clay, Chen Zhongmei, inherited and developed the art of purple clay making from the Chen family. Chen Zhongmei was known as the master of purple clay in the late Ming dynasty. He first made porcelain toys in Jingdezhen, earning him the title of “like a devilish worker.” Later, he went to Yixing, where he cleverly combined porcelain carving art with teapot making, was skilled at intricate carving, and his works were treasured by people.

During the Qing dynasty, Chen Zhongmei’s direct descendant, Chen Buqing, took the art of purple clay making to the extreme difficulty of sculpting the Maitreya Buddha in purple clay. His products were not only appreciated by literati as collectibles but also became tribute items in the imperial palace. At this time, there were various colors of clay, including red clay, purple clay, white clay, black clay, yellow clay, pear skin clay, and pine flower clay. His outstanding creations led the trend in the art of making purple clay teapots.
